Step 2: Inside Keynote, create 6 by 4 square shapes colored by these 6 palette basis. I like the ones with slightly lower saturation so that the color won't take over the main messages of my slides. I usually browse over Coolors's random color generator to get inspired, and some of my favorite color palettes (for making slides) are here. The number 6 here is because Keynote supports 6-color palette, as you see in the color box shown above. It's an artistic choice and it's all your call. You can do this in any form from any resource. Step 1: Select 6 colors as your palette basis. Now with this website in hand, let's walk through how to customize Keynote color palette step by step. I used this website to create the gradient color palette you see on the top. While this blog is not about finding the best color palette for aesthetic purposes, I'd recommend Coolors, a webiste that gives you inspiration about colors, and helps you generate color palettes. Why not? Even using the simplist white or black theme, changing the color palette is one of the simpliest ways to give your presentation a unique visual appearance. Then you'll probabaly also care about color choices and color consistency in your slides. If you choose to use Keynote over Powerpoint, I bet there are some aesthetic considerations. Changing the color palette allows you to use these colors throughout your entire presentation (so that you don't have to open the color wheel and pick the color every time.) This involves generating the color gradients and placing these colors into Keynote's color box (annotated in red). If you want to create your own Keynote theme, you also want to create an accompanying color palette. Apparently, this is more complicated than it sounds. But if you find the theme chooser annoying, and would like to have the theme you created as the default theme displayed when creating a new document, you could do that as well via a change in Keynote's preferences. This tutorial shows you how to customize the color palette in Keynote (how to go from left to right in the above figure). Getting to it requires you to click right-click on the Keynote icon in the Applications folder and selecting "show package contents," where they'll be listed under /Resources/Themes.Īfter you've saved your newly created theme, it will be shown in Keynote's theme chooser. The path for your personalized created Keynote theme is ~/Library/Application Support/iWork/Keynote/Themes, while Keynote's default themes are hidden deep within the app. The inspector is also the home to other goodies that can help you fine tune your template even more, such as changing the resolution size.Īfter you're done creating your template, make sure you click on the "Save Theme" option instead of "Save" or "Save As," as the latter two will result in your file being saved as a Keynote document rather than a theme. There, you can change the slide's background to any color, gradient, image fill, and tinted image fill. Doing this requires you to click on "Inspector" and choosing the "Master Slide Inspector" pane within it. While modifying fonts is relatively straightforward, other things aren't as apparent - such as changing the background of a slide.
